The essay in Islam in Indonesia draw on a range of disciplines -- including philosophy, history, social anthropology, political science, and Islamic studies -- in their examination of the role that the academic study of Islam has played in the on-going religious and social tranformation of Indonesia.
Of particular concern is the relationship between the articulation of Indonesian Islam and the interests and ideologies at play in this process. These essay are grounded in the assumption that knowledge is not merely a body of information, but also a means influencing society.
With this in mind, the authors - from Egypt, Australia, the US, the Netherlands, Scotland, Canada, and Indonesia - turn their attention to the important political and social issues currently facing Indonesia and to how Indonesia's unique approach to Islamic studies is shaping country's future.
